Awareness with Horses

Equine assisted Coaching or Counselling

Horses have been transporting us on outer journeys for thousands of years. In the 21st century, equine coaching or counselling is a profound new way of horses transporting us on inner journeys from where we are to where we need to be.

Our Approach
Awareness with Horses believes that every person is an expert on themselves. We hold a safe space of trust, empathy, confidentiality and unconditional positive regard - as do the horses. By their very nature, horses provide honest and non-judgmental feedback by picking up on our body language and responding with incredible accuracy to how we are in the present moment. This can help us become more aware of what we need to focus on to get from where we are to where we want to be, or they may show us new ways of practicing mindfulness, emotional intelligence and connecting with nature.

Equine assisted coaching or counselling can help to bring about calmness, presence, clarity, an "aha" moment and/or a feeling of well-being.  Working experientially and phenomenologically with the horses we can look at goals or challenges, or simply focus on the naturally occurring learning and therapeutic opportunities they can provide  in the present moment. The learning is in the experience and the non-judgemental feedback the horses will give as we explore how to enter a relationship with them which is power with, not power over.

Coaching and counselling one-to-one sessions...
We offer one-to-one sessions combining equine facilitated experiential learning with coaching or counselling. Like any other coaching or counselling sessions it is best to come for a series of sessions, normally a minimum of three.

Equine Assisted Coaching
Equine assisted coaching offers a combination of professional coaching and equine facilitated experiential learning where we focus on moving forward in your professional and/or personal life. You start off and end as you would in a normal coaching session with somewhere between 60% and 80% of the time engaging with the horses.

Sessions last for 90 minutes, and on your first coaching session we start by discussing and mutually agreeing how you would like to work and how many sessions you would like to achieve your objectives.

How much does it cost?
One-to-one coaching or counselling sessions cost £60 for one and a half hours.

Equine Assisted Counselling
Equine assisted counselling offers a combination of traditional talking therapy and working therapeutically, experimentally and experientially with the horses in a safe, confidential environment. During a session the client starts and finishes with traditional counselling, this will take up 60% to 70% of the session, the other 40% to 30% is spent engaging with the horses therapeutically. The more traditional counselling part happens inside siting down and talking, or if the client chooses, and when the weather is suitable sessions can be longer and we can stay outside, walking and talking, being with the horses, and/or doing artwork, writing and reflecting within the therapeutic process of counselling.

Where as equine facilitated learning, art of horse whispering and coaching sessions can be a one off session, with counselling sessions it is best to contract for a group of at least 3 sessions, 3 sessions to 12 sessions is normal, and some clients re-contract for much longer. We start with a free session to make sure equine assisted counselling and Awareness with Horses is right for you.

During this first session you get the a chance to engage with the horses and discuss and mutually agree how you would like to work and how many sessions you would like.

Awareness with Horses counselling sessions are given by Sue Blagburn. They presently form part of Sue's on going study as a student counsellor. Equine assisted counselling sessions presently form part of Sue's work placement towards her advanced training as an integrative humanistic counsellor.
